Cycling on the Danube
We completed the 2 week Danube bike-and-barge in late September 2022. We had previously done the 1 week trip (thru Rad Reisen), and we were pleased to have the same excellent level of service and accommodation. The staff on board were universally lovely and helpful. Our room was comfortable and spacious; we would have enjoyed the balcony if only the weather had cooperated, but rain kept us from spending time there. The staff in the dining room was attentive and provided thoughtful service. We enjoyed the entertainment provided by Eduardo, the pianist, and by other staff who sang and encouraged us to dance in the lounge in the evening hours. Everyone in our party enjoyed the hot tub at various times throughout the trip.
We felt that the pace of riding on the 1 week trip (from 2017) was more relaxed; on our 2022 trip, we often felt rushed to get from our disembarkation to our meetup with the boat. On the other hand, we had a more generous sight-seeing time in Vienna on this trip. We loved the variety of cultures we encountered going through Serbia, Croatia, etc. We very much appreciated the time in Budapest, and would have enjoyed more time in Bratislava.
The gear handout process was a bit of a muddle. We felt this could have been avoided if there was a more thoughtful checkout process rather than the free-for-all that left some people without the gear (mostly things like bike repair kits, etc.) that they needed. Or perhaps better yet, if the gear was proactively put into the guest rooms, it might have worked more smoothly. Finally, we would have appreciated more hooks to hang clothing (especially wet riding gear) in the room.
All in all, we had a marvelous trip, and would highly recommend Rad Reisen and the Danube bike and barge trip.
